by Roberta Craig, 2022 – 2023 District Director
June 30, 2025
Dear Younger Self,
Over the next couple of weeks, someone will ask you to serve as a district leader. This request was made after thoughtful discussion among district leaders who were once where you are today and believe this is the path to fulfilling your purpose.
You joined Toastmasters because your voice could not be heard among the cacophony of coworkers, family, and social media “friends” seeking attention. You can’t understand why your dreams of the future – recognition for your hard work, that promotion, your dream job always seems out of reach. The last few years have weakened your determination to seek everything you want to have, do and be. Though new to Toastmasters, you courageously stepped forward when asked to serve as a club officer. Despite the new project management and communication skills you have achieved, your dreams are still out of reach and you feel your personal growth slowing. That is why you need to say yes now. To lean into the fear and venture outside your club as a district leader.
Martin Luther King Jr once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” As a district leader you will receive advanced training that will guide you to strategically grow club membership levels in your service area. You will explore the needs of members in other clubs and communicate what you learn to your fellow district leaders. With their support, you will guide a TEAM to host a speech contest, encouraging members to share their stories and make their voice, their message heard.
For as little as one to two hours a week, the path to fulfilling your purpose will become clearer. You will recognize how your emotions influence your actions. You will learn how to channel them to adapt to changing circumstances. You will expand your capacity to understand what others are feeling and offer comfort and support as they seek to fulfill their purpose. You will enhance your communication skills exponentially and build healthy strong relationships.
I know you have doubts. I know when asked, the easy response is to say you don’t have time, maybe next year. This is your future self; I know you can do this. I have walked in your footsteps. I admit I stumbled. At one point I felt like quitting. When that moment comes, reach out to your mentor and fellow club members. They will remind you why you started this journey. Steve Jobs said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” Trust the abilities your fellow Toastmasters see in you and say, “Yes! I will step forward and serve as a district leader.” Trust me, the dots on this path will lead you to a great discovery in your future.
